Four Mile is situated in the heart of the Black Hills and was named Four Mile by the Earliest stagecoach line that came through this area.
It is located 4 miles from Custer City which was the first town established in the Black Hills and was where the mail was picked up.
This historical site includes a copy of the map of General George Armstrong Custer's southward exploration rout through the Black Hills which references Four Mile.
Also on display are Postal records from 1890 made out to Four Mile, showing the lost ghost town of "MOSS CITY" as being located at Four Mile.
The old 2 hole outhouse on the property, identifies the site believed to be an outhouse hole from the early stockade that was part of Four Mile. Confirmation about the early stockade is on display and came from the grandchildren of a pioneer lady who stayed in the original stockade.
Area Historical Displays Include:
A crosscut section of the huge tree cut down in Herbert Draw dating back to the 1600's. Photos taken before, during and after the cutting are also on display.
There is also a tin-type picture believed to be of Calamity Jane, one of the Black Hills best known women.
As you tour the site you can walk on Boardwalks, stone walkways, grass paths and even walk next to original wagon ruts.
You can visit the Town Hall, Saloon, General Store, Church, Bank, a Talking Outhouse, The Sheriff's Office, Dakota Territory Jails complete with furnishings donated by the City of Ward, SD. and a Slat Iron jail cell donated by the city of Trent, SD. and many other historical structures.
You can visit the Gift Shop, have a meal or an ice cream at the chuck wagon, watch living history demonstrations, skits and interact with the local town folk.
